School Wellness Policies
In 2004, President Bush signed a Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act that strengthened school nutrition programs. This act requires schools to write and implement a local school wellness policy that gives both school administration and parents the structure to combat childhood obesity, which has more than doubled in the past twenty years. The law states that the policy must be formulated by parents, students, representatives of the school food authority, the school board, school administrators, and the general public. The policy should be developed to meet the school district’s needs.
