Wellness Solution Theme Meals (The School Edition) are geared for schools age children. These publications provide not only nutritionally analyzed menus and recipes with HACCP instructions, but also fun activities along with great ideas for decorations and costumes to make each planned event lots of fun for the children as well as the staff. There are many to choose from with lots of variety, enough for many special days through out the year. These theme meals help provide adequate nutrition for grades K-6.

PRODUCT GUIDE FOR SCHOOLS

NUTRITION FACT LABELS – What Do I Really Need To Keep?

In order for the state agency to complete an accurate nutrient analysis of your school’s selected week of menus, you will need to collect nutrition fact labels or manufacturer’s specification sheets which include nutrient information for some of the meal items served.

Many of the items that schools typically serve are already found in the Child Nutrition Database (CND) used by the state agency. As a guideline, the nutrient information for the following products are not found in the CND and will need to be made available to the consultant doing your School Meals Initiative Nutrition Assessment:

Meal Item or Recipe Ingredient

Dairy Products

  • Yogurt
  • Reduced Fat or Sodium Cheese
  • Egg SubstituteIce Cream, Ice Milk, Frozen Yogurt, Sherbet
  • Non-Dairy Sour Cream
  • Reduced Fat or Fat Free Sour Cream
  • Whipped Toppings
  • Cheese Sauce

Meat, Poultry, Fish, Processed Meat

Please remember that the nutrition fact labels or manufacturer’s specification sheets must contain complete information including the weight for the stated serving size and amount of each of the following nutrients: calories, protein, total fat, saturated fat, carbohydrate, vitamins A & C, calcium, iron, dietary fiber, cholesterol & sodium.

In the 1960's, the big focus was on nutritious foods. People no longer wanted processed food; they wanted fresh, healthy foods. There also came a shift in meal preparation. People were looking to simplify cooking by making one-pot dishes and using Jell-O molds as desserts. This theme meal celebrates the "groovy" Sixties by offering suggestions for menu and decoration ideas, as well as a fun activity idea for students to participate in during class.
